While there are a number of challenging tracks on the NASCAR stock car racing circuit, few have earned the fearsome reputation of South Carolina’s Darlington Raceway. Known as ‘the track too tough to tame’, its shaped like an egg with a surface that shreds tires. Some of the best drivers–including NASCAR’s ‘King’ Richard Petty never mastered it. David Person, on the other hand, dominated at Darlington. He won 10 races and won 12 poles–both records that will likely never be broken. He actually made the ‘track too tough to tame’ look downright easy.

David Pearson was born three days before Christmas 1934 in a tough textile town near the North Carolina/South Carolina border called Whitney. His parents both worked in the local mill and did their best to provide. David quit school after the 10th grade and also worked in the mill. He was soon drawn away by his love of fast cars. He bought his own car and began racing at short tracks in the area. He ran his first race in’52 in Woodruff, South Carolina and won his first championship at the old Greenville/Pickens Speedway in’59.

Pearson never sought out stock car racing immortality, but some of his friends had other ideas. They began raising money to buy a car to race in the NASCAR Grand National series (the forerunner to today’s Sprint Cup). With a patchwork of financial backing, David began racing a limited schedule on the Grand National circuit and was named the’60 rookie of the year. In’61, he became the first driver in history to win on 3 of the 4 superspeedways in the same season (Charlotte, Atlanta, Daytona). This attracted sponsors, and before he knew it he was a top NASCAR driver winning Grand National titles in’66,’68 and’69.

During the 70′s, Pearson specialized in superspeedway racing. Through the end of the’70s, Pearson won 43 races. In addition to his mastery of Darlington, he posted remarkable numbers all over the circuit. He is one of two men to have won more than 100 races, and his 105 is second only to The King Richard Petty’s 200 wins. Hes also second on career poles (113) to Petty. Head to head, however, he has a slight edge over NASCARs legendary King: in races where he and Petty finished 1-2, Pearson won 33 to Petty’s 30. His 11 consecutive poles at Charlotte is a feat that will likely never be matched. Another record that may never be broken is his’.29% winning percentage, as well as his record of starting from the pole in 20% of the races he ran.

In March, 2000, SC Highway 221 through Spartanburg County was renamed David Pearson Boulevard in his honor. He lives in Spartanburg to this day. Pearson still takes to the track occasionally–he and current NASCAR driver Carl Edwards were the first to race on the newly repaved Darlington Raceway last Spring. And he’s still known as ‘The Silver Fox’, a nickname given to him for his prematurely gray hair.

Hairspray the musical is set in Baltimore, Maryland the year is 1962. Our hero in the musical is is a young overweight girl named Tracy. Tracy has always dreamed of becoming a big star, if and when you attend this musical, make sure you have a front row seat, if you don’t you will want to be sure to bring your opera glasses, so as not to miss a moment of this fast-paced play.

As Tracy is watching television one day, she hears that a popular show is going to sponsor a dance contest. Tracy knows that is is her long dreamed of shot at fame. When her overweight mother finds out about her plans, she discourages the idea for two reasons, one is that she worries that people will make fun of her sweet but overweight daughter, and the other is that she thinks the show plays racist music.

Finally Tracy makes it to the big dance audition, thanks to the permission of her father, Wilbur. As she is auditioning she meets a popular boy named Link Larkin. At this point you will want to make sure you use your opera glasses, as you will want to catch the expression on Tracy’s face, you will see her face light up, maybe in the same way yours did in high school. Our hero begins to daydream that she and Link will end up together. At this point in the musical, she sings a wonderful song about her dream. As Tracy sits in detention feeling sorry for herself she meets a nice black boy named Seaweed, Seaweed is a great dancer, and teaches Tracy some amazing dance moves. A dance party is scheduled for the school, and Tracy decides to attend despite her recent run of very bad luck. This time Tracy’s luck is about to change, attending the dance, is the owner of the Corny Collins Show, the show that is to feature the dance contest, as he watches the dancers he notices the moves that Tracy puts on, he falls in love with her dance style, and chooses Tracy to dance on his show. Tracy is ecstatic to find out that at long last she will be on the show! Make sure you are using your opera glasses at this point.

Tracy again finds herself as the recipient of good news, she finds out that the lovable hunk Link Larkin will be singing a romantic song to her on T.V! Another character on the show is Amber a snobby cruel girl, who also happens to be in love with Link, finds out about Tracy’s fortune, and decides to make Tracy’s life a living hell, full of harassment.

As the play continues, Tracy and others are invited to the record show that Seaweed’s mother owns, A party is planned for all that attend. All during this time, Tracy becomes close friends with Seaweed, and is enraged to find out that blacks are only allowed to attend the Corny Collins T.V. Show once a month on “Negro Day” Tracy begins to fight for blacks rights. To find out how Hairspray ends, you will have to attend, but it will be a wonderful experience for all who go.

Hairspray is a delight to attend, and a bigger delight to hear, it is no wonder it made such a run on Broadway, Remember to bring your opera glasses to catch every last expression, and the wonderful costumes. This is truly a performance to cherish.
