For example, any particular thing may contain in itself all of the possible substances of which reality may be with greater and lesser proportions of substances. He described this as “a portion of everything in everything.”

He backed this theory up by describing the diets of animals. Food, for instance, must be made up of hair, flesh, etc., because animals must get their hair from hair and their flesh from flesh. As a result, all food and all other beings must contain greater or less proportions of all the possible substances in the world, an infinite number. Thus, beings become differentiated because they have a higher amount of particular substances versus lower amounts of other substances. The higher portions give beings their distinctive essence(s).

However, Anaxagoras also believed that being began as a uniform substance. How did he incorporate change into this system? He added the possibility of change when he introduced the concept of the Nous, the Greek for “Mind.” The Mind, according to Anaxagoras, ordered, structured, and moved being from a static, “immutable” state into a metaphysics of plurality. It is only from “mixture and seeds” that plurality is a possible metaphysical account, but he still remains true to the Pre-Socratic tradition of unified reality. The Nous provides an efficient cause of the world, or how the world came to be, but fails to provide any final or ultimate cause, or why the world came to be. In fact, Socrates grumbles at Anaxagoras’ philosophy because his innovative first principles lack any explanation, other than its mechanical purpose.

Though some of Anaxagoras’ theories lay in interpretive gray areas, he certainly introduced an original system of metaphysics and first principles that revived the possibility of change after Parmenides seemingly annihilated it. In any event, we should rightly remember Anaxagoras’ philosophy for its influence and relevancy to later thinkers such as Gottfried Leibniz (the universe being contained in all things) and Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (being versus becoming, being versus nonbeing).

In his documentary “The Cartel,” Bowdon, a New Jersey TV news reporter, turns the camera on the monumental corruption and mismanagement that has led his state to spend more than any other on its students but with shoddy results. As $400,000 is spent per classroom, but reading proficiency is just 39% (and math at 40%), the crisis is clear, which doesn’t mean it’s not controversial.

    On the one aspect is the monolithic Jersey teachers union and umbrageous school officials, who see to it that that, as Bowdon points out in his film, 90 cents of every tax dollar go for other expenses, including six figure incomes for school administrators and, in a horrendous example, a school board secretary who makes $180,000. On the other side are the supporters of charter schools — private schools that can maneuver outside the influence of what Bowdon calls The Cartel. In those broken public schools, Bowdon points out, it’s very nearly unacceptable to fire a teacher — so even a mediocre one has a career for life.

    “The film examines lots of out of the ordinary aspects of public teaching, tenure, funding, patronage drops, corruption –meaning larceny — vouchers and charter schools,” says Bowdon. “And as such it kind of serves as a swift-moving primer on all of the heavy topics amongst the education-reform movement.”

    Bowdon’s docudrama started touring the festival circuit in summer of 2009 and made its theatrical debut in April 2010. Hopefully it will get a rise, and not be overshadowed, by the more recently released documentary “Waiting for Superman,” by “An Inconvenient Truth” director Davis Guggenheim. Bowdon says the documentaries can be seen as companion pieces: his focusing on public policy and Guggenheim’s taking the human-interest slant. “My film is the left-brained version, more analytical,” Bowdon says, “‘Waiting for Superman’ is more the right-brained treatment.”

    The left-brained tactic means arguments that follow the economics — money misspent, opportunities wasted. Although he calls it left-brained, still “The Cartel” reaches some disheartening moments of emotion. A girl’s tears upon hearing that she wasn’t selected to attend a charter school, that she’s stuck in her public school, illustrate the failure of a system as well as Bowdon’s charts and interviews.

    And although there’s a satire in this variety of public depravity happening in a state famed for its organized crime, it’s unambiguous that this is not an isolated collapse. Bowdon’s film illustrates a local predicament, but any watcher will acknowledge the systems of system failure in their own state’s schools. The one he seems to be most behind is the charter schools, which take the reins from the unions and give them back to the taxpayer. Nevertheless he also knows it’ll be an uphill battle to recover control from those who’ve worked so intense to make education very profitable for the very few.
