Singapore gives appealing inducements and tax freedoms to multinational corporations. Moreover, Singapore is a nation that has creative guidelines and ordinances for immigration. Due to these, Singapore is favored by foreign entrepreneurs and professionals as the country where they can put up their businesses and/or find work.
A work permit granted by the Singapore government is a requirement in order for foreign national to legally work in Singapore. This article serves an overview of the different kinds of work permits issued to foreign nationals who are working – or who wish to work – in Singapore.
Employment Pass (EP): Company owners and well-educated employees may be issued an EP by the Singapore government. The main requisites to be granted an Employment Pass are the following: one must hold an academic degree from an accredited university and must have a set monthly salary amounting to more than SGD2500.00. The validity of the Employment pass is one to two years, and may be renewed.
Entrepreneur Pass (EntrePass): There are situations when entrepreneurs wishing to invest in Singapore may not qualify for an EP because they have no academic degrees; the Singapore government, in these situations, issues entrepreneurs the EntrePass. This work permit is renewable as long as the business is still thriving. It is valid from 1 to two years.
S Pass: This work permit is granted to mid-level immigrant employees and is based on the person’s employer’s quota eligibility. An employee must have a fixed monthly salary of SGD1800.00 and, instead of being a degree holder, may only have at the minimum a technical diploma. The S Pass is valid for 1 to 2 years and is renewed as long as the employee is still hired by the employer.
Miscellaneous Work Pass: The Miscellaneous Work Pass is issued to foreign nationals who are in Singapore for short-term work assignments, a foreign religious worker or a representative of the clergy who is a speaker in a seminar, or a member of the media whose presence in the country is not officially sanctioned by the Singaporean government.
